5 Things To Do When You're Getting Divorced

Divorce is a tough subject to broach. But sadly, quite a few married couples get divorced. In fact, according to the American Psychological Association, between 40 to 50 percent of married couples get divorced every single year - in fact, I am one of those couples, as I am currently going through a divorce myself. But I am learning that there are some do's and do not's when it comes to divorce. Here is what I have learned so far.

DO Get A Reputable Lawyer

If there is anything that you should do in any divorce is to get a good and reputable lawyer. If for example, you live in Florida, a Tampa divorce lawyer would be the route to go. The first thing that you will want to do is to schedule a consultation with them and see how they can help you out in this especially trying time. Many lawyers are also trained in other areas like mediation, family law, and child custody laws. Don't just choose the first lawyer that you see, as you may be working off of your emotions. Take the time to do your research, find one that will suit your needs and help you out with your specific case.

DON'T Do It All On Your Own

Going through a divorce is a trying time. It can take a huge emotional toll on you. You need to be able to take time to grieve the marriage. Do not be ashamed to ask for help when you need it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Some days will be better than others. One day you may feel wonderful, and the next, upset. Don't be afraid to reach out to friends and family members. Remember they are there to help you. For example, if you need help cooking dinner - reach out. Those around you love you and are willing to help you.

DO Take Care Of Yourself

This may seem pretty hard to do, and sound kind of stupid. But one thing that you must do when you are getting a divorce is to take care of yourself, especially if you have children. You want to set a great example for them. Not to mention that taking care of yourself and even pampering yourself every once in a while never hurt anybody. You need to take care of yourself physically, but also mentally as well. If that means visiting a therapist or talking to someone, then do not be ashamed to do so.

DON'T Send An Overabundance Of Texts Or Emails

Once it has been decided upon that there will be a divorce going forward, try to keep emotions in check when communicating. Not only does this mean when you have to see your ex in person, but over e-mails and texts as well. If you two have children together, though, you should always keep it business-like and not emotionally-driven, but always get that in writing.

DON'T Try To Represent Yourself In Court

It is extremely important that you hire a lawyer, especially if your divorce case has to go to court. Again, I will use Florida as an example, you would hire a Tampa divorce lawyer in order to get everything in order to move ahead with the divorce. It is wise to hire someone who is skilled in this profession and knows what they are doing.
