The Marriage Contract: Or Why We're Putting It Down On Paper
Recently, well, in between my stepfather's death and getting back to life as normal, my husband and I have had some really stressful times. I'm talking major-mondo-crazy stressful times. We can't even afford where we are currently living, which means that we are going to have to move back home to my mother's home with a five year old.
Granted, we lived there when we first got married and had a newborn. This is going to be a totally different experience. But I digress. This is the reason why the husband and I are so stressed. We're scared to death about money, buying food, the whole shpiel. It's upsetting, and I know, I know that money is the number one cause of ending relationships. Well, the other day, we almost hit our breaking point. So much so that I left the house and went to my mother's for the night.
I truly thought this was the end for the two of us. And this is the man, and when I say the man, I mean the man, the only one that ever understood me for who I was, got my sense of humor, and even still thinks I'm beautiful even though I lost my teeth due to medication side effects. I mean, c'mon. I've got to be smarter about this.
So, my husband and I came up with the idea of a marriage contract. Something that we are going to draft up together, something that we are going to put in writing, and then we are going to sign it. Sure, it isn't truly legally binding, but to us, it means something. We aren't perfect, we know that. We acknowledge that, and that is one of the first tenets of the marriage contract.
Needless to say, the next two months are going to be ones filled with strife and chaos, because we are moving yet again, back to my mother's home (I feel like such a failure when I say that.) But I know that we are going to make it through, as long as we lean on one another, and not turn away from each other in times of strife. Also, obviously, we've got to be 10000millionbillion times smarter with our money.
