So, soon the time will come for us to move out of our dingy little apartment into a home. Granted, we're moving back in with my mother, because, well, frankly, we cannot afford rent anywhere around here in Northern NJ. I partially feel like a failure because of this, but I know, I know, that it is for our own good, and will allow us to save money in the long run, and I am eternally grateful to my parents for taking us on. But I digress. This means that in less than a week we have to start the whole full-blown moving process again. It's been less than a year. So, here are my favorite five tips for getting organized when you're moving.
1. Throw Out Unnecessary Junk
Yup, that's right. Just throw it out. Trust me, I have a big problem with this one. It is hard for me to part with virtually anything. Perhaps I'm a step or two away from becoming a hoarder. But honestly, we can accumulate so much unnecessary "junk," that doesn't need to carry over into our new homes. If you're not comfortable throwing it out, than may I suggest....
2. Have A Yard Sale
Having a yard sale is not only a great way to get rid of any unnecessary items, but you can also make a little bit of extra cash, too! We're having one in about three weeks, where we plan to sell items that were just sitting around. I have this "Instagram Box," which is basically a streaming Instagram electric picture frame that has just been sitting around. Might as well get it into hands that can actually use and enjoy it!
3. Make A Checklist, Check It Twice
Making a checklist is an imperative part of moving. You'll want to check off the items that you are getting rid of, as well as items that need to be packed away, items that you will need to unpack immediately after moving in, like foodstuffs, Check off where you are storing your valuables during the move, find a rental truck, these are all things that need to be set up before the big move.
4. Make Certain Boxes Easily Accessible
If you have children, make sure that you pack the toys in a box that is readily accessible for when you move into your new home. Because goodness knows, that the first thing the children will ask for is their toys to play with. But that gives you extra time to unpack everything else. Also make another box containing items that you'll need pretty quick, like the coffee maker (you're gonna need the caffeine!) So it's easier on everyone.
5. Label Everything
Labels, labels, labels. It is important to label everything, no matter what. It will make life so much easier when you get to your new place, you'll be able to easily find everything! There is never such a thing as too many labels, so get out that label maker and go crazy with it, you've got the permission!
When a move is on the horizon, it's always easier to pack when you have a clean, organized space. A self-storage pod can give you that, plus an easier moving day! Pods sit in your driveway and allow you to sort, store, and finally move your belongings at your own pace. If you have a home showing to prospective buyers, you can toss the clutter in the pod and show off a clean, minimalist home. If you're moving from rental to rental, a pod allows you to clear clutter and deal with making your rental shipshape before you leave.
With these tips and tricks, your move should go smoother! Oh, who are we kidding, moving is chaotic! But maybe these tips will help a little bit. Good luck on your next move!
